Year 6 Learning Examples
Our lucky Year 5 and Year 6 children had the pleasure of working with some of the Cambridge United football players this half term, who came to enthuse our children about the importance of being proactive and demonstrating hard work and dedication. The children were able to meet Zak Bradshaw who talked about his training schedules and how he had to put aside other distractions to be able to achieve his dreams of becoming a footballer. The children were fortunate to then hold a question and answer session with Zak Bradshaw. This posed questions such as: Why did you want to be a footballer? Who inspired you? How do you deal with feelings after a bad match? What did your football career look like from the beginning to the end? These were very poignant questions for our children, who we hope will have taken inspiration from this opportunity.
The year 6’s have been busy creating poems – with only 10 words! After rearranging them in many different ways, rewriting the new ideas, we then used a variety of punctuation to help change the meaning and flow of the writing. We ended up with some amusing stories!
We have finished the DT unit on the Crumble Controller. This was an exciting way to combine the understanding of circuits and the coding from computing to create a programmed item. Well done to everyone who worked together to dazzle the adults!
After discussing adaptation, we investigated the effect of “bird beaks” (different sizes and shapes of tongs) on how birds would need to adapt to changes in their environment so they could survive. We recorded some wonderful observations!
Discussing our friends and family this half term has allowed us to explore what they mean to us, and how relationships can change over time. Our floor book allows us the opportunity to creatively display our understanding.
The year six class has been working together to identify an understanding of topics associated with PSHCE. Being socially aware has been important when focusing on "The Rights of a Child" "Anti-Bullying" and "Friends and Family" topics so far this year.
What happens to the arrow when it’s behand a glass of water? We found out in our refraction investigation. Blocks and filters have also helped us understand the properties of light.
Year 6 visited Duxford Imperial War Museum as part of their learning around World War II. They were fascinated by the co-ordination stations that were used by England to strategise their approaches to the war effort and to seek victory. Our day at Duxford was the highlight this half term. Planes, planes and more plane! It was a great experience.
Year 6 spent time looking at different European languages for "European Day of Languages". To begin, we asked them to select any word. Then on their IPads, they researched how to say the same word in several different European languages. Finally, they created a poster on Purple Mash and uploaded it to TEAMs. This was a completely independent activity with many websites and applications needing to be accessed. They all did incredibly well, with some spectacular outcomes!
We have started the year excited to be in year 6 and working together to improve all our skills. We have been enjoying reading “The Journey” in English and imagining the context of the story. We also created our own “tableaus” to help engage with the emotion of the characters in the story.
During Mathematics, we have used Cuisenaire rods to help contextualize concepts such as equal/unequal, part/whole and multiplicative/additive.
