What is School Council?

Here at Queen Emma Primary School, we believe it is very important for all children to have a voice and feel as though their views and opinions matter. Our School Council is in place so that pupils have a voice and are involved in decisions about the school that affect them. They also play a crucial role in school improvement.

Each class, from Year 1 to Year 6, have selected two children who will listen to and represent the views and concerns of other pupils. Weekly class council assemblies ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to raise issues, share ideas and take part in discussions that involve all of their classmates in reaching a shared solution. Wider issues that arise in class council assemblies are then brought to regular School Council meetings. This ensures that as many pupil voices as possible are heard. Once the issues have been shared and discussed by the School Council, the School Council leaders will share the ideas and possible solutions with members of the school leadership team.

In addition to attending regular meetings to share the views of their peers, the School Council are also involved in a wide variety of activities throughout the year. Each year, the School Council organises and runs a variety of school wide events to raise money for their chosen charity. In the past, these events have included a ‘Wacky Hair’ day, ‘Teacher Swap’ sessions and a sponsored Readathon. More details will follow soon about this year’s chosen charity and special events.

Garden

The School Council have been busy planting trees outside as part of our outdoor project! They chose where to plant each tree and worked as a team to dig a special type of hole, plant the tree and wrap around the protectors. We look forward to seeing them grow!

House Captains

At Queen Emma, we have four houses – Franklin, Hawking, Newton and Darwin. Two Year 6 house captains lead each house. Our house captains are ambassadors for Queen Emma. They set a positive example in terms of attitude to learning, attendance, behaviour, manners and appearance to all at Queen Emma. They are always ready to learn, work hard and demonstrate the use of the 7 habits in all areas of school life.

What do our house captains do?

• Attend house captain meetings
• Plan, organise and lead house events and competitions
• Encourage and inspire pupils in each house to make good choices and congratulate their efforts towards learning
• Collect, monitor and announce house points
• Support staff in school with tasks such as showing prospective pupils, parents and teachers around school
• Wear their house captain badges with pride
